Barbering Crossover

Specialize in men’s hair and grooming, and start a creative career in barbering. Barbers work primarily in salons, barber shops, and spas, and provide hair care and skin care services including hair cutting, hair styling, and hair sculpting, facials, and shaves. You will take classes specifically designed to help you pass both the practical and written portions of the California State Board of Cosmetology licensing examination for barbers.

Licensed cosmetologists or SMC Cosmetology Students who have completed the program can enroll in the Barbering Crossover Program. You will be eligible to take the California State Board of Cosmetology exam to become licensed barbers after completing 200 training hours. Cosmetologists who participate in the barber crossover program learn new industry-relevant skills that may increase their client base.

Barber Crossover Program Pre-requisites

All students who complete the cosmetology program with a minimum of 1,600 are qualified to enroll in the SMC Barbering Crossover Program. Cosmetologists who participate in the barber crossover program learn new industry-relevant skills that may increase their client base. Please be advised, you must show your instructors your Proof of Training Document on the first day of class.

Licensed cosmetologists completing 200 training hours in the barber crossover program are eligible to take the California State Board of Cosmetology exam to become licensed barbers. Please be advised, you must show your instructors your Cosmetology License on the first day of class.

Required Classes

· COSM 77, Barbering 1 (2 units)

o Prerequisite: Possession of a cosmetology license or completion of 1,250 hours in barbering coursework and COSM 31A.

o This course provides training required for the barbering license for the state of California. This course includes facial hair design, health and safety, and preparation and performance of shaving.

· COSM 78, Barbering 2 (1 unit)

o Prerequisite: Possession of a cosmetology license or COSM 50A and completion of 1,250 hours in barbering coursework.

o This course is required for the barbering license for the state of California. This course will prepare students for the practical portion of the comprehensive test with emphasis on shaving techniques.

· COSM 50R, Written Preparation for Barbering State Board Exam (1 unit)

o Prerequisite: Possession of a cosmetology license or COSM 31A and COSM 50A and completion of 1,250 hours in barbering coursework.

o This course is designed to prepare students for the National- Interstate Council of State Boards of Cosmetology (NIC) exam required to obtain a barbering license. The course covers all topics in the written exam, including: disinfection, sanitation, health and safety, rules and regulations, bacteriology, anatomy, and physiology, advanced shaving and facial hair design, men’s hair cutting and styling, men’s chemical services and men’s facial massage and treatments.

· COSM 95A, Salon Experience (1 unit)

o Prerequisite: Completion of all beginning courses. Cosmetology students must have completed at least 300 classroom hours; Skin Care students must have completed 60 classroom hours; Nail Care students must have completed 40 classroom hours.

o COSM 95 is a variable unit course offered in four modules — A, B, C, or D. Students should sign up for the module that best fits their course schedules to maximize hours earned. This course is a module of a variable unit, variable hour, open-entry/open-exit experience provides the opportunity to obtain practical salon training working on patrons. The practical work is as close to actual beauty salon experience as possible. Students will earn hours toward the required practical hours and operations to be eligible to take the California State Board of Barbering, Cosmetology, Esthetics, and/or Nail Care exam, under the supervision of faculty. The student has fulfilled the salon requirement upon completion of 650-700 hours and has successful demonstration of all required operations.
